What is AI Watermarking?

Invisible markers for detecting AI-generated content.

What is AI watermarking?

AI watermarking embeds invisible statistical patterns in AI-generated content that can later be detected. This enables identification of AI-generated text, images, or audio without affecting quality.

How It Works

  • Text: Bias token selection toward detectable patterns
  • Images: Embed patterns in pixel values
  • Audio: Add inaudible frequency signatures
  • Detection: Statistical analysis reveals watermark

Use Cases

  • Detect AI-generated misinformation
  • Verify content authenticity
  • Track content provenance
  • Comply with disclosure requirements

Limitations

  • Can be removed through editing
  • Not all providers implement watermarking
  • Detection is probabilistic
  • May slightly affect output quality

Can watermarks be removed?

Some watermarks can be removed through paraphrasing or editing. Robust watermarking schemes are designed to survive modifications, but no watermark is completely tamper-proof. Detection is probabilistic, not absolute.
